Sneaky Link
Private? OFTEN. Dishonest? THAT'S A DIFFERENT THING. A sneaky link is a casual hookup kept quiet, and the quiet part is what the phrase is actually about.
Couples come in twos. A polycule is the whole network of people connected through non-monogamous relationships, and this is how those networks actually hold together.
A polycule is the full web of people linked by romantic or sexual relationships in a non-monogamous setup. The polycule meaning comes from a pun on "molecule," because the diagrams look like one: people as atoms, relationships as the bonds between them.
Two people dating is a couple. Add a third who is involved with one of them, and you have a shape. Add a fourth who is involved with the third, and the shape gets a name. That web is the polycule, and it includes people who have never dated each other but are connected through someone who has.
That last part is what people miss. Your partner's other partner is in your polycule even if the two of you have no romantic connection at all. There's a word for them: metamour. How much you want to know them is one of the biggest choices a polycule makes.
Most polycules are one of a handful of recognisable shapes.
Dyad. Two people. Technically the smallest unit, though nobody calls a couple a polycule until there's a third connection.
V (or vee). Three people, where one person dates the other two and those two are not involved with each other. The person in the middle is the hinge. Hinges do a lot of scheduling.
Triad. Three people who are all involved with each other. Different from a V because the connection runs in every direction. A throuple is one common form of triad.
Quad. Four people. Often two couples who connected, sometimes a triad that added a fourth.
N. Four people in a chain. A dates B, B dates C, C dates D. Two hinges, and the people at each end may never meet.
W. Five people in a longer zigzag of the same kind. Rarer, and mostly used to describe a shape that already exists rather than one anyone planned.
Network or constellation. Anything bigger and looser. At this size people stop drawing diagrams and start describing who they're close to.
Nobody picks a shape from a menu. Polycules grow into whatever they turn out to be, and the shape usually gets named after the fact.
Two polycules with an identical diagram can feel completely different, and the difference is how much contact the metamours have.
Kitchen table polyamory means everyone can sit around one table comfortably. Metamours know each other, socialise, sometimes become friends. It works when people genuinely like each other and turns into a chore when they don't.
Parallel polyamory means the relationships run alongside each other without touching. You know your metamour exists, you may know their name, and that's the extent of it. Less admin, less closeness.
Plenty of polycules land in the middle. Some metamours are friends, others exchange a polite hello once a year. Both are fine as long as nobody's pretending to want more contact than they do.
These get used interchangeably and they mean different things.
Put simply, ENM is the ethic, an open relationship is one arrangement, a throuple is one shape, and the polycule is the diagram of whatever you ended up with.
Explaining your whole setup in the first message INTENTIONS ON THE TABLE BEFORE YOU MATCH.
The awkward part of non-monogamous dating is usually the disclosure conversation. It goes away when everyone has already disclosed.
The shape matters far less than the admin. The polycules that last tend to have sorted the same unglamorous things.
One calendar that works. More people means more scheduling. This is the single most common failure point, and it's boring, which is why people ignore it until it bites.
Health agreements everyone knows. Testing frequency, protection, and who is seeing whom. This is care, not surveillance, and it needs saying out loud rather than assumed.
Named hierarchy, or honestly none. Some polycules have a primary partner. Some reject ranking entirely. Both work. What doesn't work is having a hierarchy and pretending you don't.
Metamour expectations set early. Kitchen table or parallel? Decide before someone shows up at a birthday dinner assuming they're invited.
Room to renegotiate. Agreements made when a polycule had three people rarely survive contact with the fifth. Revisit them on purpose instead of waiting for a fight.
Jealousy doesn't vanish because you drew a diagram. It just becomes something you talk about instead of something you hide.
Amurest runs fully in the browser on iOS and Android. Browsing, messaging, filters and your profile all work on mobile, and there's nothing to download.
Amurest is NO STRINGS-ATTACHED DATING for adults who'd rather state their setup than manage a slow reveal.
Which makes it a REMARKABLY practical place to date if your relationships already come with a diagram. You meet people who have said what they're looking for, so the first message isn't a disclosure form. Create a profile for free and browse moderated profiles.
RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, REVERIE ARE MANDATORY! Especially when more than two people are affected by what you decide.

Throuple
Third wheel? WRONG WORD. A throuple is three people in one relationship, all of them in it by choice, and here's how that actually works day to day.
